2019 -Our Parents Say....We wanted to know what North Shore Parents beliefs are about substance use. This will educate NS-CASA on areas to focus on in the future and better get to know our community attitudes, norms and beliefs.
Thanks to the 138 parents who have responded to our Parent Survey in 2019. Here is what you told us! The substances parents are most concerned about are alcohol (ranked "5" or "4" by 71%) and tobacco and vaping (70%) followed by prescription opioids and heroin (52%). 56% of the high school parents who responded feel teen alcohol is "a major and growing issue that requires increased vigilance and action" while 35% feel it is "a manageable issue that requires attention but is not threatening." However, in terms of their own children's alcohol consumption, 54% reported they have only done "light experimentation" and 30% did not feel their children have experimented with alcohol. This is notable when compared with our 2017 Bach-Harrison student survey results, where 60% of students reported that they drink regularly and 36% reported bingeing on alcohol.
