A more detailed recap of our finding is attached, but here are a few highlights:
- 89% of the respondents reported that they’ve discussed the dangers of substance use by the time their child is 12 years old – a key to prevention!.
- 83% of respondents would like to see a stronger parent network within our community, building on NS-CASA’s current efforts such as Safe Homes Parent Pledge, safe social options for teens/tweens, and more joint parent-student educational events.
- 73% were ‘moderately or very concerned’ about their kids’ mental health, with only 40% ‘very confident’ they could detect a problem. They see an important role here for NS-CASA.
- The survey results also point to a continuing disconnect between parents and their children regarding substance use. For example, 74% of parents answered ‘Never’ when asked about their oldest child’s consumption of alcohol over the previous 30 days as opposed to previous student surveys suggesting far higher levels of use.
